Equity and credit market conditions continue to indicate significant liquidity to underpin ongoing M&A activity. Last week, mixed earnings releases caused a slight pullback in the U.S. equity market. However, the Canadian equity markets were buoyed by strengthening oil prices, nearly at US$50 per barrel. Credit conditions remain robust, albeit with higher credit spreads than a year ago.

Last week, despite lackluster earnings reports, North American equity indices increased as a result of positive sentiment from an OPEC meeting, the possibility of U.S.-E.U. trade deal and a slower than expected rise in U.S. interest rate. As a result of lost ground regained over the last several weeks, North American indices are near their cyclical highs while the Canadian dollar continued to strengthen.

The equity and credit markets continue to indicate significant liquidity in the system to underpin M&A activity. Valuation multiples remain near 10-year highs, while market volatility and bond yields remain near historic lows. The equity and credit markets continue to indicate significant liquidity in the system to underpin M&A activity. Valuation multiples remain near 10-year highs, while market volatility and bond yields remain near historic lows. The dovish remarks by central banks in North America, Europe and Asia and new jobs data in the U.S. contributed to the reversal of the decline seen the week before last. As oil prices have stabilized, the impact of the energy sector on the overall economy has become less pronounced. However, recession fears remain. Mid-market credit conditions continue to moderate with credit spreads above prior year levels and average total leverage pulling back from the 5.5x levels seen a few months ago to about 5x, which is still robust by historical standards.
